The Sally Swift Scholarship Fund

Purpose/History

The Sally Swift Scholarship Fund, established in 2003, provides financial support to new Centered Riding Instructors, updating instructors, clinic organizers and symposium attendees. When Sally Swift passed away April 2, 2009, USDF created The Sally Swift Memorial Fund from donations to the Dressage Foundation by Sally Swift’s friends. Please note: the Sally Swift Memorial Fund is managed by the Dressage Foundation and not by the SSSF Committee.

Scholarships and Organizer Grants

For the year 2019 we are offering a combined total of six (6) scholarships for instructors and two (2) grants for organizers of Update Clinics and New Instructor Courses, each in the amount of $400 USD.

Two types of scholarship/grants are available. One type is for individual Instructors and the other is for Clinic/Course Organizers. These Scholarships and Grants will be divided equally between (1) Europe and (2) North/South America including all continents outside Europe and are based on a commitment to Centered Riding as well as financial need. Two (2) Instructor Scholarships will be offered for each of the following periods:

Scholarships: for instructors participating in CR Instructor Course or Update Clinic

For clinics held:

·        January – April: two (2) instructor scholarships

-    Deadline for application is November 30, 2018

·        May – August:  two (2) instructor scholarships

-     Deadline for application is March 31, 2019

·        September – December: two (2) instructor scholarships

-      Deadline for application is July 31, 2019

Organizer Grants: for organizers of New Instructor Courses and Update Clinics

This Grant is for organizers of a Centered Riding New Instructor Course or an Update Clinic being held in 2019. There are only two (2) grants available for 2019: one is designated for courses/clinics held in Europe and one for those held in North/South America including all continents outside Europe. The Grant of $400’s each is based on both financial need and commitment to Centered Riding. The grants are subject to the following:

1.     Clinic Organizers may receive a maximum of two grants under this policy

2.     The grants must be a minimum of two years apart

3.     Clinics or courses that make a profit in excess of $1,000 USD are not eligible to receive a grant

Application deadline: March 1, 2019 (Applications that are incomplete or received after the deadline will not be considered) 

Applicants will be notified within one week following the deadline whether or not they have been awarded a grant.

To Apply for the Organizer Grant:

Organizers must submit the following to the Centered Riding Office

1.     Completed application form

2.     Letter describing commitment to Centered Riding and financial need for the grant

To Receive Payment of the Grant Funds:

The organizer must submit the following to the Centered Riding office within 30 days of the completion of the Course or Clinic:

1.     Part 2 of the application form signed by the clinician conducting the course/clinic

2.     Statement of the course/clinic income and expenses indicating whether a profit or loss was made

3.     List of participating Instructors

4.     Typed article, in English, about the experience of hosting a Centered Riding clinic that will be published in the CR Newsletter. The article needs to be submitted in electronic format to the Centered Riding office.

5.     Two or three color digital photos from the clinic of you and/or the clinic participants that can be used in the newsletter would be appreciated

Funds will be awarded after all supporting documentation has been received and reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. Failure to submit the required documentation within the required 30-day time period will result in the grant being forfeited.

Organizer Grants awarded will be in the amount of $400 USD for the 4-day Update Clinic and the 7-day Instructor Course.

Instructor Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

The individual instructor scholarship is available to those seeking to become a Centered Riding Instructor as well as any Centered Riding Instructor who has paid their current membership dues and is required to update that year. The scholarship is based on both commitment to Centered Riding and on financial need.

To Apply for the Scholarship:

The Centered Riding office must receive the following no later than the deadline as shown under Application Deadline

1.     Completed Part 1 of the application form 

2.     An essay (in English) describing his or her commitment to Centered Riding and the financial need for the scholarship.

a.     If you are unable to write the essay in English, you will need to ask someone (a friend or your country’s liaison) to translate it to English for you.

Maximum award is $400 USD. An instructor who has received a grant in the past may only apply for another grant after four years.

Application deadline: (Applications that are incomplete or received after the deadline will not be considered) 

Applications must be submitted to the Centered Riding office according to the following schedule:

For 2019 for clinics held:

·        January – April: two (2) scholarships/organizer’s grants

-   Deadline for application is November 30, 2018

·        May – August:  two (2) scholarships/organizer’s grants

-   Deadline for application is May 31, 2019

·        September – December: two (2) scholarships/organizer’s grants

-   Deadline for application is July 31, 2019

To receive payment for the Scholarship:

To receive payment for the scholarship, the applicant must successfully complete the Update Clinic. Within 30-days after completion of the clinic, the applicant must submit electronically the following to the Centered Riding Office:

1.     Part 2 of the application signed be the clinician teaching the Update Clinic

2.     A typed article, in English, about the experience of attending the Update Clinic that will be published in the CR Newsletter. The article must be submitted in electronic format and sent to the Centered Riding Office.

a.     If you are unable to write the article in English, you will need to ask someone (a friend or your country’s liaison) to translate it into English for you

3.     Two or three digital color photos of you and/or the clinic participants that can go with your article for the Newsletter.

Funds will be awarded once all the supporting documentation has been received and reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. Failure to submit the required documentation within the required 30-day time period will cause the scholarship award to be forfeited and may be made available to another applicant.

Individual Symposium Scholarship:

Eligibility criteria:

There are two (2) Symposium Scholarships of $400 USD available to any Centered Riding member with paid dues, including instructors, supporting members, rider members, or business members. Scholarship is based on commitment to Centered Riding and financial need. One scholarship will be awarded to a European and one to a member from North/South America or from another continent outside Europe.

To Apply for the Grant:

The applicant must submit the following to the Centered Riding Office no later than September 1, 2019.

1.     Completed Part 1 of the application form

2.     An essay, in English, describing his or her commitment to Centered Riding, the reasons he or she wants to attend the Centered Riding Symposium, and the financial need for the grant

3.     NOTE: Full payment of the registration fee must be made before the “late payment” date listed on the Symposium Registration Form and/or website

Application Deadline: September 1, 2019

Applications for the Symposium Grant must be received by the Centered Riding office by September 1, 2019 and the payment of Symposium Registration Fee must be made before the “late payment date” listed on the website and/or registration form.

To Receive Payment of the Grant:

To receive payment of the grant, applicant must attend the full Symposium. Within 30-days after the end of the Symposium, the applicant must submit the following to the Centered Riding Office:

1.     Part 2 of the application form signed by the Symposium Chair

2.     Submit electronically a typed article, in English, about the experience of attending the Symposium that will be published in the CR Newsletter

3.     Two or three digital color photos from the Symposium that can be used in the CR Newsletter.

Funds will be awarded once all documentation is received and reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. Failure to submit the required documentation within the required 30-day time period will cause the grant to be forfeited and may be made available to another applicant.

Awarding of Funds

Once all follow-up documentation is submitted to the Centered Riding Office upon the completion of the instructor course, update clinic or symposium and has been reviewed by the Scholarship Committee, funds will be sent from the Centered Riding Treasurer.

Management of Funds

All funds and donations will be sent to the Centered Riding Treasurer to be kept in the SSSF account. The Treasurer will issue checks or electronically transfer funds to approved recipients per instructions from the Scholarship Committee.

General

If, in a particular year, there are more applications for specific scholarship or grant and there is unused monies earmarked for another category under this policy, the committee will use its discretion in awarding excess funds as an additional grant from a different category to a qualified applicant.

All applications must be sent to the Centered Riding Office. They will be acknowledged by email by the Centered Riding Inc’s office and kept on file to establish a “waiting list” in case previously awarded funds is not used.

All essays included in the application of a scholarship or grant must be typed and submitted in English. All newsletter articles and photographs must be submitted in electronic format.
